Our Aims

  • Provide a culturally relevant knowledge base and skill set in research ethics that will allow fellows from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the Caribbean to function as independent research ethicists in their home countries and institutions.

  • Prepare fellows to act as researchers, research ethics educators, leaders in research ethics committees, and as research and ethics policy consultants.

  • Prepare fellows to facilitate institutional change of ethical policy and practices in research.

  • Develop and maintain centers of excellence in bioethics and research ethics at St. George’s University (SGU) and the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro (UAQ).

  • Develop and sustain a bilingual research ethics network in the Caribbean that expands the existing CREEi alumni network.

  • Develop additional research ethics capacity in the Caribbean by engaging fellows in delivering annual workshops in research ethics for researchers, research ethics committee members, and other stakeholders.

Our
Accomplishments

CREEi accomplishments include meeting its aims as described below

  1. Designed and delivering a new master’s degree program in bioethics (MScB) that provides those enrolled with culturally relevant knowledge and skills for research ethics review, leadership, education, and scholarly projects. The MScB program uses a part-time asynchronous online-onsite structure that permits the delivery of each course simultaneously in English and Spanish, and the integration of monolingual students in both languages. Translation of materials and discussion boards uses free artificial intelligence software. The CREEi MScB curriculum, course syllabi, readings, and other resources can be downloaded here.

  2. Enrolled and educated 45 fellows to function effectively as research ethicists and educators, research ethics committee leaders, and research and ethics policy consultants. In keeping with the relative sizes of English- and Spanish-speaking populations in the region, 14 were English-speakers and 31 were Spanish-speakers.

  3. Equipped 45 fellows with knowledge and skills for contributing effectively to research ethics policy and practices within their respective institutions.

  4. Established the Center for Global Bioethics (CGB) at the Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation (WINDREF) in Grenada and the Unidad de Bioetica (http://unidadbioetica.com/) at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro in Mexico.

  5. Built a bilingual research ethics network across the Caribbean basin that shares educational and other resources online and through the CGB and Unidad de Bioetica.

  6. Delivers research ethics workshops addressing the needs of participant stakeholder groups including research ethics committees and others.
