Curriculum

CREEi designed a part-time, asynchronous, hybrid online and onsite curriculum that delivers regionally relevantmaster’s level education in research ethics. First offered as a one-year certificate program in 2014, it used content and pedagogy consistent with North American and international standards. In 2020, it evolved into a two-year master’s in bioethics degree (MScB) program credentialed by Clarkson University. SGU and UAQ approved and can offer their own MScB or equivalent adapted from the CREEi MScB.

Course Faculty

Course faculty are primarily regional experts. Some are graduates of the certificate program who also hold higher degrees. To teach simultaneously in English and Spanish, each course is delivered by two co-faculty (one native English speaker and one native Spanish speaker) who bring to the course regionally and culturally relevant content and activities and share these across languages. This facilitates student learning in both languages, enhances cross-cultural communication and insight, and helps nourish a regional network of research ethicists.

Students participate in asynchronous written discussions on the course learning platform. They translate each other’s words using free artificial intelligence software. Human translation of some course content supplements this and simultaneous human interpretation is provided for live activities online and onsite.

The curriculum includes course work in research ethics and 14-months during which each fellow is mentored to design and conduct normative work in research ethics or bioethics of regional significance.
