The CREEi Hastings-Center Bioethics Scholars Program (BSP)

By December 2023, essays by the eight scholars participating in the Bioethics Scholars Program (BSP) will have been completed, translated, and made available in both English and Spanish languages on The Hastings Center and CREEi websites. These essays give voice to emerging bioethicists from low- and middle-income countries bordering the Caribbean Sea as they explore some of the ethical concerns pertinent to the region. The Caribbean and Latin American region is geographically and culturally diverse ranging from small island developing states and large countries like Mexico. We envision that these essays, and the skills that these scholars gained through the BSP, will contribute to strengthening regional bioethics discourse, education, research, and policymaking. A broad overview of the essay topics is bulleted below.

Slated to run for nine months, the BSP will have continued for well over one year. During that time it advanced the critical thinking and writing skills of its scholars by providing each with their own mentor and an in-person intensive workshop in their native language. Relationships built through the BSP expand and nourish the small regional network of bioethicists and research ethicists. We look forward to seeing some of these essays developed further by their authors and submitted for review and publication in academic journals.
